BALTIMORE, MD. January 21, 2010 – Prometric, a leading global provider of technology-enabled testing and assessment services, today announced that the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) has committed to a new, long-term contract for worldwide delivery of its physician certification and maintenance of certification examinations via the Prometric network. Also as part of the new contract, ABP’s general certification and subspecialty certification exams will be converted from paper and pencil to computerized format and newly available in Prometric’s global test center network in the coming years.
In the time that it has relied on Prometric as its testing partner, ABP has moved a large number of its exams to computer-based testing at Prometric sites, mainly utilizing its own proprietary test delivery engine to work in conjunction with Prometric systems. Moving forward, ABP will be working with Prometric to transition all its certification examinations to a computerized format and will retire its own test engine technology to rely solely on the Prometric test delivery driver for all of its exams. Beginning in 2012, all physician certification and maintenance of certification examinations offered by the ABP will be available only through Prometric test centers.
"Working with Prometric has allowed us to quite literally take the delivery of our exams to the next level of sophistication, flexibility and accessibility for our candidates,” said Linda Althouse, Vice President, Psychometrics and Research at the American Board of Pediatrics.
Bill Murtagh, Senior Vice President of Sales and Client Services at Prometric, stated, “The high level of collaboration and partnership that exists between Prometric and the ABP has truly allowed us to reliably and methodically grow its program around the world. The most widely respected medical specialty boards in the world partner with Prometric. We take this as a collective vote of confidence in the level of specialized attention and service we bring to the healthcare industry.”

About the ABP
Founded in 1933, the ABP is an independent, non-profit organization whose certification is recognized throughout the world as a credential signifying a high level of physician competence. Certification by the ABP has one objective -- to promote excellence in medical care for children and adolescents. Certification is earned after a rigorous review of a pediatrician's professional and educational background in addition to comprehensive examinations of relevant medical knowledge and clinical judgment. ABP provides a standard of excellence by which the public can select pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists. Although ABP certification is voluntary, nearly all qualified pediatricians seek this recognition.
The ABP awards certification in General Pediatrics and in the following subspecialty areas: Adolescent Medicine, Child Abuse Pediatrics, Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrics, Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine, Pediatric Cardiology, Pediatric Critical Care Medicine, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, Pediatric Endocrinology, Pediatric Gastroenterology, Pediatric Hematology-Oncology, Pediatric Infectious Diseases, Pediatric Nephrology, Pediatric Pulmonology and Pediatric Rheumatology. Certification is also awarded in conjunction with other specialty boards in the areas of Hospice and Palliative Medicine, Medical Toxicology, Neurodevelopmental Disabilities, Sleep Medicine, Sports Medicine and Transplant Hepatology.
